SHOULD YOU BUY A CHEAP, USED MCLAREN MP4-12C??

        McLarens are one of the fastest cars on earth. McLaren initially was only a racing team but made a production car the legendary 'F1' in the mid 90s & then didn't make any street legal car for another 15 years when they launched the MP4-12C. McLaren also made the SLR for Mercedes in the 2000s. From 2010 McLaren have made the following models in the following series:

  1. SPORT SERIES- 600LT & 600LT Spider, 570S & 570S Spider, 570GT, 540C
  2. SUPER SERIES- MP4-12C & MP4-12C Spider, 650S & 650S Spider, 675LT & 675LT                                           Spider, 720S & 720S Spider & the newly released 765LT
  3. ULTIMATE SERIES- P1, Senna & Senna GTR, Speedtail, Elva
  4. GT- GT
        McLarens are super fast, they accelerate like hell (even if it is base 570S or 540C) & their reliability is..............um.....well......is a COMPLETE JOKE especially in the earlier models. The MP4-12C , McLaren's first model has depreciated heavily. A new one back in 2012 would have started at $229,000 but now you can buy one for $85,000-$100,000 which means that they have lost nearly 60% of their original value. One reason of this depreciation is their poor reliability. Also, spare parts are really expensive & hard to get & on the older models, you never know what is going to break e.g. the transmission, the iris screen. Due to all of this, no one wants to own these cars out of warranty. A new one comes with a 3 year UNLIMITED MILEAGE WARRANTY  & the warranty is available for Sport & Super series models for 10 Years OR 75,000 miles on the clock & to renew this warranty for a year, the price is $6,000. But this McLaren Extended Warranty is not available in all markets. In Australia & North America, you can chose the McLaren Extended Service Contract.

        So, if you are shopping for a supercar & see a cheap McLaren MP4-12C for the price of  a used 2018/2017 Range Rover, & are tempted to buy, WAIT!! Don't buy it hastily if you are considering it & first get it checked at a McLaren dealer. Check if it has warranty & if all is okay, then only look to buy it. Sometimes you can get a car in which issues will pop up after you buy it & you will thank the warranty. But sometimes you can get a car that is very reliable & will not give you any issues & which will lead you to thinking that the warranty is a complete waste. But I would suggest that if you are buying any McLaren, extend the warranty as a precautionary measure. After all, you will never know when a warranty will come handy............
